How moderation works
What happens to the things you write here, and who sees them.
The short version. Everything posted on Axis Voice is checked automatically for a small number of serious things: bullying, threats, anything sexual involving a student, scams, and people trying to get a student on their own. If something looks wrong, a board member reads it and decides what to do. A person makes every real decision.
Messages is not open yet. Private messaging between students is paused while we get the safety and privacy side right — see the Messages page. Everything below is ready for it and will apply from the day it opens.
What the check actually looks at
Every post and comment passes through a list of words and patterns that runs on our own server. Nothing leaves Student Axis at this stage. The list itself is not published — if it were, working around it would be easy.
Almost everything stops right there. Ordinary conversation is never sent anywhere and is never read by an AI.
If something does trip that check, a short extract is sent to an outside service to be judged properly. Two are used: the free moderation service run by OpenAI, and, for the small number of cases that cannot settle, Claude, made by Anthropic.
What is removed before anything is sent
Names, usernames, email addresses, phone numbers, payment IDs and the addresses inside links are all taken out first. The people in a conversation become simply “A” and “B”. Times become “3 minutes later” rather than a date.
Being honest about the limit: removing names does not make writing anonymous. If a message names a school and describes where someone sits, no amount of substitution hides that. We remove what can be removed mechanically, and we are not going to pretend it is more than that.
What happens if something is flagged
Nearly always: nothing you would notice. It goes onto a list that board members read. If it was a false alarm — which it often is — it is cleared, and the copy of the message is deleted along with it.
For a very small number of clear, serious cases the site acts straight away, because waiting for someone to log in is not good enough:
- a public post can be hidden — not deleted, and it can be put straight back;
- someone can be paused from sending messages for 24 hours.
Both are temporary, both are reversible, and a board member reviews both. Nobody is removed from Student Axis by a machine.
If you are struggling
If you write something that suggests you might hurt yourself, it is not treated as breaking a rule. Nobody is paused or hidden for that. It goes to a board member so that somebody knows and can check on you.

Things worth knowing
- It is not instant. The check runs every few minutes, not the moment you press post. If you see something wrong, open the post and press Report — that goes straight to a person, and it is the strongest signal we get, because a human notices things the automatic check misses. You can report a comment the same way.
- Nobody is told who reported them. Reports are only visible to the board, and you cannot look up whether anyone reported you — so reporting something is safe.
- It gets things wrong both ways. It flags innocent messages, and it misses things that are worded carefully. It is a safety net, not a guarantee, and it is never a reason not to tell an adult.
- When Messages opens, board members will be able to read it. That will be written plainly at the top of the page, as it was before — nobody is monitored quietly here.
- Cleared flags are deleted. The ones that led to a real decision are kept while they still matter, so a pattern of behaviour does not disappear.
If you think we got it wrong
Email board@studentaxis.org and a person will look at it. If your messages were paused automatically, say so — those are reviewed the same day. Nobody gets in trouble for asking.
